A FOUR-goal haul by Dan Brown helped Rocester overcome an early deficit to relieve holders Newhall United of the Steve Hackett Memorial Shield, writes DAN BISHOP.

Despite stifling heat at Hillsfield the two-sides managed to put on an entertaining show, which raised more than £300 for the British Heart Foundation.

Newhall took a tenth-minute lead when a slip by Jonathan Douglas allowed in Nick McInulty, who slotted the ball past Richard Froggatt with ruthless efficiency.

The equaliser came on 24 minutes when Brown beat Josh Pearson for pace, with the Blues centre-half bringing down the Romans striker in the box, conceding a penalty and earning a red card in the process – Brown dusted himself off to tuck home the spot kick.

Down to ten men, Newhall found themselves under pressure, and Brown turned Joe Tomlin and fired past Simon Baldwin.

However, the Blues were determined not to relinquish their grip on the silverware, and within a minute an excellent finish from an acute angle by Matt Draycott restored parity.

When Brown did beat Baldwin, Yoann Fournier was on hand to clear the ball to safety, but as the hosts' man advantage and superior fitness came into play the Romans regained the lead on 69 minutes.

Ward held off Tomlin before laying the ball off to Brown, who smashed the ball past Baldwin for his hat-trick.

Brown added another five minutes later after cutting inside and slotting the ball into the bottom corner.

Brown then became provider a minute before the break, when he latched onto a ball over the top and squared for Ward to finish.
