UTTOXETER cyclist Joe Evans is preparing to fly out to represent Great Britain at the European Junior Track championships in Anadia, Portugal, next week, writes DAVE PARKINSON.

The 17-year-old Thomas Alleyne School pupil will be targeting gold in the four-man 4km team pursuit and the 3km individual pursuit, as well as the championship-closing Madison event.

Evans, who rides for the Haribo Beacon team, has just returned home from a training camp in Newport and will head over to Portugal today for the Championships, which begin on Tuesday.

He took to Twitter to say: "Really excited to be representing Great Britain at the Junior European Track champs."

British Cycling performance pathway manager Ian Yates said: "I'm pleased with the squad we have selected for the UEC Junior and Under-23 European Track Championships.

"We have a good mix of first and second year riders across both age-groups representing Great Britain who will all benefit from the experience of competing at international level.

"It's also a good opportunity for myself and the coaching team to assess riders' progress which is one of our key priorities for this event.

"The UEC Junior and Under-23 European Track Championships are an important part of our riders' journey to become a world-class athlete and we're all looking forward to the racing being underway."

Evans' hopes are high, particularly following success earlier in the season when the team won gold in the team pursuit at a prestigious international event at Apeldoorn, in Holland.

Evans took silver in the individual pursuit in Holland, behind team-mate Matt Gibson.

And there will be no rest for the Uttoxeter youngster when he returns to this country, as it will be straight into the National Track Championships in Manchester at the beginning of August.
