A CHARITY desperately trying to stay open in Uttoxeter is set to hold a picnic in a bid to raise vital funds.

The Art and Soul Friendship Group, a charity supporting people with mental health issues, will hold the event at Bramshall Road Park from noon to 3pm on Monday, August 4.

The picnic was originally an open invitation to member's family and friends but with the charity trying to secure funding to keep its project open, they decided to use it as a fund-raiser.

The charity has been struggling to secure funding which could mean there is a 'real potential' it could be forced to close for good. The club relies on charity grants and cash awarded by Staffordshire County Council but has found it has started to become increasing difficult to secure the money.

The picnic in the park will include some unusual and exotic animals from Nesta's Ark who will be charging £2.50 to enter into her tent.

There will also be treasure hunt for children and young people costing £1.50 per person and organisers are hoping to have a police car full of balloons so visitors can guess the number of balloons in the car.

If this is not possible then the balloons will by attached to one of the PCSO's bicycles.

Prizes available will include Alton Towers tickets for two people and admission will cost £1 per person, with organisers thanking Alton Towers for their donation.

There will be a professional face painter who will charge £3 per face.

Vikki Baker, Art and Soul senior project worker, said: "We will be having a fun game of competitive rounders for all to participate in. Why? Because we can.

"Please bring a picnic with you and your family and friends and be part of this activity. We have invited the ice cream van and hope that Uttoxeter fire station staff and engine will be able to keep us company.

"Art and Soul needs the support of the community and would appreciate your company on the day."

Future fund-raising events for Art and Soul include Jay Passey, of Doveridge Shooting Ground, who has offered to make a sponsored bungee jump in September.

In the same month staff member Kerry Gorter will be doing a prison break event. Anthony Fowell is also being sponsored for Art and Soul when he completes his triathlon on August 3.

Ms Baker said: "Please call into the group if you would like more details or to sponsor any of these events. We would also be grateful if you would take a sponsor form around at work."
