Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service launches retained firefighter recruitment drive

A RECRUITMENT drive has been launched to boost the number of retained firefighters.

Part-time crew members are being sought at Uttoxeter station.

The retained firefighters would provide vital emergency response cover from either their home or work base, which must be within five minutes travelling time of their station. Applicants must be aged 18 or over.

More than 400 retained firefighters work within Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent and approximately 18,000 dedicated people carry out the role nationally.

They can be called upon to support their whole-time colleagues in tackling a range of incidents including fires, floods, road traffic collisions and chemical spills.

Retained firefighters can also get involved in community fire safety initiatives in their local area, including Home Fire Risk Checks and school visits.

Many part-time crew members have a full-time job outside of the Service and have an agreement with their employer that they can leave work if they are alerted to an incident. Others provide cover during nights or at weekends.

People interested in becoming a retained firefighter will need to fill in an application form, pass written literacy and numeracy tests, physical tests, an interview and a medical.

Successful applicants will take part in an initial training course and, following its completion, will attend weekly drill nights to ensure they maintain their skills.

Drill nights at Uttoxeter are from 7pm-9pm on Mondays. They take place at Barton-under-Needwood from 7pm-9pm on Thursdays.

In addition, the retained firefighters will be able to participate in a whole host of other courses which run throughout the year.

Retained Support Officer for the east of the county Ian Pullen said: “Our retained firefighters play an integral role in the life-saving work of Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, helping us to provide first class emergency response cover for our residents.

“They bring a range of skills, expertise and experience which is utilised and built on through being a part of the Service. I would encourage enthusiastic, dedicated people to submit an application form as soon as possible.”
