Step forward for those with mental illness

STAFFORDSHIRE'S police and crime commissioner has welcomed assurances that beds will be available and accessible to avoid mentally ill individuals being locked up in police cells.

The police and crime commissioner Matthew Ellis has expressed his concerns that despite progress over the last six months with mental health provision in Staffordshire, since June the number of people who have been detained in a police custody cell under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act had started to rise again.
