UNLICENSED waste carriers have been targeted in a multi-agency operation.
Scrap metal collectors and dealers, unlicensed waste carriers and other potential rogue traders were all targeted during a multi-agency partnership day between East Staffordshire Borough Council's Enforcement Team and Staffordshire Police.
This was just one of many operations taking place nationally.
The action follows new laws introduced in 2013 which saw scrap metal dealers and collectors having to obtain a licence from the Local Authority.
East Staffordshire Borough Council's Enforcement Team inspected four scrap metal sites in Burton and Uttoxeter for compliance. All sites were keeping proper records and were not found to contain stolen items.
Twenty-nine drivers were spoken to in relation to their commercial activities. Of these 29, only two appeared to be scrap metal collectors for which one individual produced all the necessary documentation.
Councillor Sonia Andjelkovic, Deputy Leader for Regulatory Services said:
"East Staffordshire Borough Council has welcomed the introduction of the new legislation in October 2013 aimed at stopping the scourge of metal thefts that has cost the country millions of pounds.
"I'd like to thank all those who participated and cooperated during the operation."
