UTTOXETER’S golden boy has done it again – winning no less than four medals and setting a world record at an international event.

Adam Peaty smashed the world record in 50-metre breaststroke in the semi-finals at the European Championships.

He scooped four golds overall in the 50-metre breaststroke, the 100-metre breaststroke, 4x100m mixed medley, and the 4x100m medley relay.

He said: “It feels absolutely amazing.

“I looked at the scoreboard about five times before I knew I had broken the record.”

The 19-year-old swimmer is competing at only his second major international event, having made his debut at last month's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where he won two golds and a silver for Great Britain.

He posted on social networking site Twitter: “What an amazing end to an amazing season.

“It was so good to be part of that relay.”

Adam continued: “The end of the season has come but I cannot say how proud I am to be part of Great Britain.

“Faster, stronger and even more hungry next season. Bring it on.”

Mayor of Uttoxeter Karen Haberfield said: “We are very proud someone from Uttoxeter has made these great achievements.

“It’s great to have someone there to encourage other youngsters in the town to follow their sporting ambitions.

“I’m really looking forward to hosting the party on Adam’s return.

“It’s going to be a big turnout.

“The event itself will be ticket only, but Adam’s walk through High Street at 7pm will enable people to show their support.

“It makes me proud to be English, never mind from Uttoxeter.

“There’s a feeling in small towns like ours that you can’t get out and achieve your goals, which Adam has proved is not the case – even though funding can be very difficult.

“We’ll be setting up a fund in his name to help children – we feel that it’s important we give our youngsters the support they need to help make their goals become a reality.”

The reception for Adam is scheduled to be hosted at Uttoxeter Town Hall from 6pm on Saturday, September 27, when people will get the chance to congratulate the Byrds Lane swimming star on his success.

He is due to do a walk along the High Street from 7pm.
