COUNCIL chiefs will not be taking immediate action to ensure the safety of a Uttoxeter junction, after a 10-year-old girl was hit by a car.

Residents of Manor Road spoke out about the 'death trap' junction which links the road with High Street after a 10-year-old girl was taken to hospital following a collision.

The youngster was taken to hospital as a precaution after the collision with a silver coloured Volkswagen Polo at the junction of Manor Road and High Street on Monday evening.

Now Staffordshire County Council Highways department has said it has no immediate plans to introduce additional safety measures to the junction as 'there have been no accidents recorded at the spot in the last three years'.

Mark Deaville, Staffordshire County Council's support member for transport and connected county, said: "I am pleased that nobody was seriously hurt in this accident.

"We want to ensure our roads are as safe as possible for both pedestrians and motorists and prioritise schemes based on potential safety risk.

"There have not been any accidents recorded at this spot in the last three years, but we continually review our roads and always encourage residents to raise any concerns they may have with their local county councillor."

Concerned Manor Road resident Cathy Kerrigan said: "The road is absolutely terrible, it's a death trap.

"The major issue is the junction onto High Street where the accident happened.

"You can't see up or down the street. You have to pull out into the middle of road just to see if its clear which is so dangerous.

"It's an accident waiting to happen, a child will be killed next and it desperately needs to be addressed by the council.

"I think speed bumps are urgently needed."

A second Manor Road resident who did not wish to be named said: "It will be even worse when the new restaurant opens on the corner.

"It's impossible to see round the cars when you are pulling onto the main road – they shouldn't be allowed to park there."
